Downgrading and Jailbreaking the iPhone 1.1.2 (for dummies, like me) on Leopard 10.5.1

Yesterday, after getting an iPhone, I frantically searched the interwebs for how to jailbreak it. I did not keep up with all the humbug about jailbreaking, so I’m showing up late in the game. But after many attempts, I finally did it, but not with ease. All the guides I used were for terminal buffs and previous iPhone owners who had done the 1.1.1 to 1.0.1 downgrading. All in all, in the end I decided it’d be best if I made a guide so that people, such as me, can have an effortless jailbreaking experience. Enjoy!

Please do this at your own risk! I am not responsible for any damage done to your phone or computer!

  1. Download Everything First

  4. Get Out of DFU Mode
  5. Install AppSnapp
  6. Install OktoPrep
  7. Install 1.1.2. Firmware
  8. Jailbreak iPhone

1. Download Everything First

  1. Apple Firmware 1.1.1 (iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw.zip @ http://www.iphone-hacks.com/downloads/file/68)

PLEASE RENAME THE EXTENSION TO JUST .ipsw NOT .zip!

  2. iNdependence Program (iNdependence.app @ http://code.google.com/p/independence/downloads/list)
  3. Jailbreak 1.1.2 (1.1.2-jailbreak.zip @ http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/site/112jb.html)

Also, now would be a good time to get a pot of tea going, you’ll need it later.

2. Put iPhone into DFU Mode

Home and Power Buttons

First off, you need to power down your phone into DFU mode. Do this by holding Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds, then release POWER and continue to hold HOME for 10 more seconds (please count them out in your head, trust me). If done correctly, your phone should show nothing but black. THIS IS OK! Now you’re ready for step 2!

3. Downgrade

Downgrading

Now plug in your iPhone to your Mac, and iTunes should boot up. iTunes will tell you that your phone is in ‘Recovery Mode’. From here, hold down OPTION on your keyboard, and click RESTORE in iTunes. A finder window should pop up, and this is when you select your “iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw” file. Your phone will now begin downgrading to 1.1.1.

Sit down and drink a cup of tea.

4. Get Out of DFU Mode

Downgrading

When iTunes is complete, it will pop up with a warning message, and this is normal. Now quit iTunes and open up iNdependence.app. The status should show you at the bottom that the phone is in Recovery mode and you should see the program doing some work. After a few seconds, your phone should pop on again, and iTunes will ask you to set up your iPhone. Quit iNdependence, you don’t need it anymore.

After your phone is Activated, iTunes should show your phone at 1.1.1 Firmware. DO NOT CLICK ANYTHING, quit iTunes, you’re done there for now (it is also ok if your phone began to sync. as this won’t cause any problems.

5. Install AppSnapp

AppSnapp

Pick up that iPhone, and navigate Safari to jailbreakme.com. Scroll down to the bottom, and select “Install AppSnapp”. It should kick you back Home and then reboot your iPhone.

6. Install OktoPrep

Turn on your phone and get back to Home, and from here select Installer (the new icon under your apps). Here, go down to the bottom and select “Install” and choose “All Packages” in the above list. Scroll down to the O’s and select “OktoPrep” then Install up top. After installing you’ll get a nice message that says “You are now ready…”, click OK and hit Home. Your phone will reboot again, sometimes twice. Ok, plug in the phone (if not already) and load up iTunes.

7. Install 1.1.2. Firmware

In iTunes, a pop-up will ask you to update, choose no and then select “Update” from the iTunes iPhone page instead..

Make another cup of tea.

8. Jailbreak iPhone

After that’s done, your phone will activate. Quit iTunes and DO NOT click ‘restore’. Run jailbreak.jar and then select ‘Jailbreak’ at the bottom. Let the program run its course. After it will ask you to reboot, and after you do, it will reboot again.

You’re Done!

When your phone is done rebooting for the second time, you’re done! Click on installer and go at it!

hi, i’m wondering why independence is saying my phone is disconnected and it’s waiting for it. What do you mean by get out of DFU, because whenever i turn my iphone on it shows me an itunes sign and then a cable with an arrow. when ever i go back into DFU and get out, Independence does not work or is on until i get out of DFU.
